The 800th Anniversary Jubilee of St. Francis of Assisi

A Letter From Reverend Fr. Juan Ignacio Lucca - Learn More

On behalf of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Vancouver, we joyfully share that Pope Leo XIV has proclaimed a Special Franciscan Jubilee Year from January 10, 2026 to January 10, 2027, marking the 800th anniversary of the passing of St. Francis of Assisi.

For our parish, this Jubilee is deeply meaningful. The Franciscan spirit shapes our worship, service, and community life. Guided by the Franciscan Friars, we continue to live the greeting of St. Francis: “The Lord give you peace,” as a call to encounter Christ and become instruments of reconciliation.

In announcing the Jubilee, Pope Leo wrote:

“The Lord revealed to me that we should say this greeting: ‘May the Lord give you peace.’ … Peace is not a formula of courtesy, but the certain proclamation of Christ’s victory over death.”

What Is a Plenary Indulgence?

An indulgence is:

“The remission before God of temporal punishment for sins whose guilt is already forgiven, which a properly disposed member of the Christian faithful gains under certain and defined conditions” (canon 992).

When we sin, confession removes the guilt of sin. However, temporal consequences may remain. An indulgence does not forgive sin — that takes place in confession — but it removes the temporal punishment that remains.

A plenary indulgence is the complete remission of that temporal punishment. It may be applied to yourself or to the souls in purgatory.

How to Receive the Plenary Indulgence During the Jubilee Year

During this Jubilee Year of St. Francis of Assisi (1226–2026), the faithful may receive a plenary indulgence by visiting a church dedicated to St. Francis and fulfilling the Church’s conditions:

  • Be in a state of grace

  • Have the intention of receiving the indulgence

  • Be detached from all sin, even venial

  • Go to sacramental confession

  • Receive Holy Communion

  • Pray for the intentions of the Holy Father (e.g., one Our Father and one Hail Mary)

Only one plenary indulgence may be received per day.

We Welcome You to Visit SFA Parish to Receive Plenary Indulgence:

We warmly invite you to visit St. Francis of Assisi Parish (SFA) in Vancouver 2025 Napier St., Vancouver during this Jubilee Year and participate in the grace of receiving a plenary indulgence through prayer, Mass, confession, and devotion. All are welcome.
